Training Classes

All trainings have an associated fee, with the exception of DOE courses that do not have student fees. The class fee will normally be $5, $10, or $15.

Students must fill out a registration form. ELC must receive all fees and registration forms prior to 48 hours in advance of the class. PayPal, money order, checks and “no change required” cash are accepted to reserve a spot in a class. Cash is only accepted in person at the ELC office. Do not send cash in the mail.

Course: Beyond Centers & Circle Time: The Series 10/28-10/30/14
Tuesday, October 28, 2014 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Beyond Centers and Circle Time:  Scaffolding and Assessing the Play of Young Children is a play-based curriculum practiced and perfected for over 30 years by the staff, children and families at The Creative Preschool in Tallahassee, FL.  It is research-based through 25 years of collected data on children with and without disabilities.  The Curriculum focuses on the intensity and density. The six-hour introductory series will involve the participant in reviewing the   theories upon which the curriculum is developed:  Vygotsky, Piaget, Erikson, and  Anna Freud. They will explore how young children acquire knowledge and skills.  They will learn to plan and organize play environments and scaffolding possibilities to will support young children in achieving school readiness.

Course: Core Competencies - Afterschool Practitioners 10/31/14
Friday, October 31, 2014 9:00am - 12:00pm

The state of Florida identified several characteristics, attributes, skills and knowledge sets necessary for professionals to be effective in the early childhood years.  These are divided by responsibility, and then tiered into different component areas.  The Office of Early Learning developed training sessions to assist practitioners and director/administrators in knowing what they need to learn about in order to chart a personal professional development path.
Registration will close 48 hours prior to the start of the course. Participants arriving prior to 10 minutes after the class start time will be admitted to the class.  Drinks and light snacks are permitted.  Park in non-designated parking spaces to the rear and right of the building.

Course: How to Administer the VPK Assessment 11/4/14

In this professional development, participants will learn the purpose of the VPK Assessment as well as how to administer, record, and score each of the assessment measures.

Thursday, November 6, 2014 9:00am - 4:00pm

Network, brainstorm, and learn from other directors about common topics or current events. Part of each meeting will inlcude a discussion of curent legislative issues including recommendations from the Early Learning Advisory Council, FLAEYC, and FACCM.

Main topic for this month is yet to be determined.

Participants must register by Wednesday November 5, 2014.

Course: Florida Early Learning & Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds 11/12/14
Wednesday, November 12, 2014 4:00pm - 7:00pm

This training provides an overview of the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds (2011) and examples of developmentally appropriate instructional techniques for four-year-old children.

It addresses the history and development of the Standards through a PowerPoint presentation, video clips, and  hands-on activities. This is an instructor-led course. It is not offered online. Cost is FREE for all participants.

Course: American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED for Adult & Child 11/15/14
Saturday, November 15, 2014 8:30am - 2:30pm

Learn the appropriate techniques for applying standard first aid procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation with and without AED’s. 

Cost: $50.00 per participant, $35.00 for those in QRIS programs. 1/2 hour lunch.

Register with payment by two business days prior to each course. Cancellations received at least two business days prior to each course will be eligible for fee transfer/refund.  After that time, no transfers/refunds will be issued.

Course: Beyond Cribs & Rattles: The Series Introduction 11/17/14
Monday, November 17, 2014 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Beyond Cribs and Rattles:  PLAYFULLY Scaffolding  the Development of Infants and Toddlers  is a play-based curriculum focused on providing the caregivers and understanding of the unique educational needs of children age birth to three years.  It demonstrates the importance of the development of play skills for later school success. The four-hour introduction series involves the participant in review of the theories of Anna Freud, Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, and Margaret Mahler. Participants will explore how children birth to three acquire skills and knowledge, identify critical components to a child’s environment and the  caregiver, and then learn to plan environmental, interactional, and activity experiences that will support the child this age to grow and develop optimally. The trainers highly encourage you to bring your copy of the curriculum to class.

Mondays:   Novemember 17, 2014 & December 1, 2014

Cost is $15.00 for both sessions, FREE to QRIS Participants. Register by Friday November 14, 2014 with paid fee.

Course: Provider Meeting 11/20/14
Thursday, November 20, 2014 12:30pm - 2:30pm

Provider meetings are a way to provide training and technical assistance to our school readiness and VPK providers on a variety of pertinent topics. Meetings are held from 12:30pm-2:30pm or 6:30pm-8:30pm. Training credit is awarded for attending and participating in these meetings. The main topic for this month has yet to be determined.

Cost is FREE for all participants Meetings begin at 12:30 or 6:30

This training addresses different elements of the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards. The training will provide a brief overview and how the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards can be used to support implementing developmentally appropriate practices for
practitioners and directors. Bring a parent of one of your children!

Course: VPK Assessment Instructional Implications 12/10/14

This professional development training is appropriate for VPK directors, administrators, and teachers. Participants will learn how to interpret the VPK Assessment scores and how to use them to inform classroom instruction.
