Training Classes

All trainings have an associated fee, with the exception of DOE courses that do not have student fees. The class fee will normally be $5, $10, or $15.

Students must fill out a registration form. ELC must receive all fees and registration forms prior to 48 hours in advance of the class. PayPal, money order, checks and “no change required” cash are accepted to reserve a spot in a class. Cash is only accepted in person at the ELC office. Do not send cash in the mail.

Current Schedule

Course: FELD Standards Concentration on Birth to Four 8/5/14
Tuesday, August 5, 2014 6:00pm - 9:00pm

The state of Florida has promulgated into rule a group of knowledge and skills that children need to know and be able to do by age range in order to be successful when entering school.  Participants will review the five domains of early learning and development, will explore the organization of the full document, and through videos and activities will practice developing environments and activities that will support children in achieving the standards and reaching optimal development.
Registration will close 48 hours prior to the start of the course. Participants arriving prior to 10 minutes after the class start time will be admitted to the class.  Drinks and light snacks are permitted.  Park in non-designated parking spaces to the rear and right of the building.

Course: Director's Forum 8/7/14
Thursday, August 7, 2014 12:30pm - 2:30pm

Network, brainstorm, and learn from other directors about common topics or current events. Part of each meeting will inlcude a discussion of curent legislative issues including recommendations from the Early Learning Advisory Council, FLAEYC, and FACCM. Main topic is yet to be determined.

Participants must register by Wednesday August 6, 2014.

Cost is FREE for all participants.

Course: Core Competencies - Early Care & Education Practitioners 8/7/14
Thursday, August 7, 2014 6:00pm - 9:00pm

The state of Florida identified several characteristics, attributes, skills and knowledge sets necessary for professionals to be effective in the early childhood years.  These are divided by responsibility, and then tiered into different component areas.  The Office of Early Learning developed training sessions to assist practitioners and director/administrators in knowing what they need to learn about in order to chart a personal professional development path.

Course: Florida Early Learning & Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds 8/12/14
Tuesday, August 12, 2014 9:00am - 12:00pm

This training provides an overview of the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds (2011) and examples of developmentally appropriate instructional techniques for four-year-old children.

It addresses the history and development of the Standards through a PowerPoint presentation, video clips, and  hands-on activities. This is an instructor-led course. It is not offered online. Cost is FREE for all participants.

Course: Integrating the VPK Standards: Phonological Awareness 8/12/14
Tuesday, August 12, 2014 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Participants will explore creating a developmentally appropriate activity, related to a bechmark in phonological awareness. Emphasis is on planning, implementation, teacher self-reflection, and documentation of the activity.

Course: How to Administer the VPK Assessment 8/14/14
Thursday, August 14, 2014 9:00am - 12:00pm

In this professional development, participants will learn the purpose of the VPK Assessment as well as how to administer, record, and score each of the assessment measures.

This is an instructor-led course. It is not offered online. Cost is FREE to all participants.

Course: American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED for Adult & Child 8/16/14
Saturday, August 16, 2014 8:30am - 2:30pm

Learn the appropriate techniques for applying standard first aid procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation with and without AED’s.

Cost: $50.00 per participant, $35.00 for those in QRIS programs.

8:30 am-2:30 pm (1/2 hour lunch)

 

A twenty person limit will be maintained in order to maximize participation.

Course: Take A Bite Out Of Biting 8/20/14
Wednesday, August 20, 2014 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Understanding why a child bites is key to solving the problem. Not all children bite out of anger or to hurt another child – in fact young toddlers can’t really understand how much pain they’re causing.  During this training participants will explore these questions; What is the child achieving by biting? and  What is the reward for him or her – does he get a huge amount of attention? We need see biting as a way of communicating rather than just bad behavior. Once we do that, we’ve got more choices in how to respond.

Cost is FREE for all participants. Food and drink are allowed.

Course: The Reality of Brain Development 9/30/14
Tuesday, September 30, 2014 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Presenter:  Tina Trivers

Tuesday, September 30, 2014 6:00 – 8:00pm

This training will be about brain development in children and adults.  It will begin with some myths vs. facts about the brain.  It will indicate how the brain develops and the basic elements of the brain.  Critical periods of development will be discussed.  In   conclusion, there will be a discussion on left, right, and middle-brain theory and        research.  The participants will take a test to determine if they are a left-, right, or middle-brained teacher.  We will discuss the results and compare and contrast the differences between the 3 different types of teachers.

Course: VPK Assessment Instructional Implications 10/7/14
Tuesday, October 7, 2014 4:00pm - 6:00pm

This professional development training is appropriate for VPK directors, administrators, and teachers. Participants will learn how to interpret the VPK Assessment scores and how to use them to inform classroom instruction.
