Training Classes

All trainings have an associated fee, with the exception of DOE courses that do not have student fees. The class fee will normally be $5, $10, or $15.

Students must fill out a registration form. ELC must receive all fees and registration forms prior to 48 hours in advance of the class. PayPal, money order, checks and “no change required” cash are accepted to reserve a spot in a class. Cash is only accepted in person at the ELC office. Do not send cash in the mail.

Course: Understanding Behavior In Children 2/9/16
Tuesday, February 9, 2016 6:00pm - 8:00pm

This training will be all about behavior in children. We will discuss what children are trying to tell us from their behavior, ways to redirect behavior using positive reinforcement in the classroom, and strategies to manage challenging behavior.

Course: Teaching Strategies GOLD Basic Course 2/12-2/13/16
Friday, February 12, 2016 8:30am - 3:00pm

This course will provide an introduction to Teaching Strategies® GOLD™ as an assessment tool that informs instruction.  On Day 1, explore and learn to use the objectives for development and learning, and discover how the four steps of the assessment process link curriculum and assessment. Participants will determine a system for organizing and managing gathered information. Day 2 brings actual website practice for both teachers and administrators that includes uploading documentation, entering notes, updating checkpoints, and using key reports for planning and communicating. Participants are encouraged to bring a lap top computer with them on day 2, along with their VPK GOLD username and password if applicable. One laptop for every 2-3 persons is recommended.

Class size is limited to 20 persons. This is the same as the online course. There is no need to take this course if you can take the online course from Teaching Strategies.

Register only if you are able to attend both days all day. No partial credit is awarded. There are no makeup dates. Participants must attend both days all day. Promptly advise the trainer if you must withdraw after registering so your place can be filled with another participant.

Course: NEW! Early Mathematics for Early Learners: How To Make Sense of Sets & Numbers
Monday, February 22, 2016 4:00pm - 7:00pm

In this interactive 3 hour session, you will know and understand the mathematical thinking number sense standards, the importance of using a developmental progression, monitoring children’s progress and math instruction throughout the day and the big ideas of sets and number sense. Participants will put into practice the big ideas of sets and number set demonstrated in the activities, and learn to use materials and resources to plan and implement math instructions. Training on the Standards for Four-Year-Olds (online or instructor-led) is a recommended prerequisite for this course.

Course: Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED 2/27/16

Learn the appropriate techniques for applying standard first aid procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation with and without AED’s. Certification from the American Red Cross is good for two years. Participants take home Adult and Pediatric Ready Reference cards. Participants must supply a unique email address that the American Red Cross will attach to their training record.

Participants are given a half-hour for lunch (brign your own). There are no vending machines in the building. Cost: $50.00 per participant, $35.00 for those in QRIS programs. Register with payment by Thursday February 25, 2016.

Course: Introduction to CLASS: What Is It & How Does It Affect Me? 3/2/16
Wednesday, March 2, 2016 6:30pm - 8:30pm

This course will take a look at the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS), a quality improvement assessment tool that will be used by the Early Learning Coalition for its Quality Counts for Children Manatee (QRIS) program and as a basis for quality improvement initiatives in all school readiness providers. This tool measures teacher and child interactions in the classroom. This session will introduce the three age groups (infant, toddler, and preschool), explore dimensions of each, answer questions providers may have about the process, and introduce the availability of future courses that will be offered (cost may be offset by the Professional Development Reimbursement Scholarship).

Cost: $5.00 per participant, FREE for those in QRIS programs for the October session. Register with payment by Monday February 29, 2016.

This session will explore the three dimensions of the Classroom Organization domain of the PreK Classroom Assessment Scoring System: Behavior Management, Productivity, and Instructional Learning Formats. We will examine how teachers who are effective in these areas have children who continue their self-regulation growth, are actively engaged throughout the day, and who have appropriate materials with time to use them.

Course: Get Your Talk On! The Importance of Oral Language in the Early Years 3/28/16

Research shows that children who have exposure to many words, and have many quality early language experiences have better school and life outcomes. What does this look like for caregivers and teachers of infants, toddlers, and preschool children? This interactive session will provide participants with opportunities to explore infusing rich oral language experiences throughout the caregiving/school day for all age groups.

Teachers who are effective in this domain have children who gain usable knowledge that is connected and organized, who are aware of their own thinking processes, and who develop rich and meaningful language patterns and vocabulary.

Course: Sensory Processing Disorder: Kids Who Feel Too Much 4/27/16

Sensory processing disorder is a condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. In this presentation, we will discuss the symptoms, causes and treatment of the disorder. Also, we will discuss strategies to help a child with sensory
processing disorder in the classroom.
