Training Classes

All trainings have an associated fee, with the exception of DOE courses that do not have student fees. The class fee will normally be $5, $10, or $15.

Students must fill out a registration form. ELC must receive all fees and registration forms prior to 48 hours in advance of the class. PayPal, money order, checks and “no change required” cash are accepted to reserve a spot in a class. Cash is only accepted in person at the ELC office. Do not send cash in the mail.

Course: Florida Early Learning & Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds 1/12/15
Monday, January 12, 2015 4:00pm - 7:00pm

This training provides an overview of the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds (2011) and examples of developmentally appropriate instructional techniques for four-year-old children.

It addresses the history and development of the Standards through a PowerPoint presentation, video clips, and  hands-on activities. This is an instructor-led course. It is not offered online. Cost is FREE for all participants.

Course: Make & Take: Reducing Challenging Behavior by Clarifying Expectations, Rules & Routines 1/14/15
Wednesday, January 14, 2015 6:00pm - 8:00pm

This Make and Take workshop includes a presentation with embedded video and several useful resources such as engaging activities and colorful handouts. Participants will learn the importance of using visuals to teach, the difference between program-wide expectations and classroom rules, the
importance of teaching expectations to children in a manner that is developmentally appropriate, and strategies and techniques to teach clear expectations.

Provider meetings are a way to provide training and technical assistance to our school readiness and VPK providers on a variety of pertinent topics. Learn the appropriate techniques for applying standard first aid procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation with and without AED’s. (1/2 hour lunch)

Course: Implementing Beyond Cribs & Rattles 1/31/15
Saturday, January 31, 2015 9:00am - 1:15pm

The four-hour introduction involves the participant in review of the theories of Anna Freud, Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, and Margaret Mahler. Participants will explore how children birth to three acquire skills and knowledge, identify critical components to a child’s environment
and the caregiver, and then learn to plan environmental, interactional, and activity experiences that will support the child this age to grow and develop optimally. The trainers highly encourage you to bring your copy of the curriculum to class.

Course: Teaching Strategies GOLD Overview 2/18/15

In this training, participants will be provided with an overview of the Teaching Strategies GOLD observational assessment system. We will review its purpose, structure, identify key aspects of the system and review the assessment cycle.  Participants will actively observe children in video clips, assigning an appropriate level to each based on their observations.

Course: It's All In Your Head - Brain Development 2/25/15
Wednesday, February 25, 2015 6:00pm - 8:00pm

This presentation will be about brain development in children and adults. It will begin with some myths vs. facts about the brain. It will indicate how the brain develops and the basic elements of the brain. Critical periods of development will be discussed. In conclusion, there will be a discussion on
left, right, and middle-brain theory and research. The participants will take a test to determine if they are a left-, right, or middle-brained teacher. We will discuss the results and compare and contrast the differences between the 3 different types of teachers.

programs who use the same curriculum, sharing brains and resources. The Ellison die cut machine and the laminators (small and large) will be available for your use. The Coalition has some additional resource books that may help with ideas. Even those using a more prescriptive curriculum like Frog Street can come and get help adjusting the curriculum to meet individual needs.

Course: Study Group: Curriculum Follow-UP & Assistance 5/14/15
Thursday, May 14, 2015 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Bring your planning sheets, your copies of your curriculum, your standards books, and any questions you may have. Each session is an open-ended work group to assist you with your planning and your understanding of your program’s curriculum. Plan together with co-workers or with staff from other
programs who use the same curriculum, sharing brains and resources. The Ellison die cut machine and the laminators (small and large) will be available for your use. The Coalition has some additional resource books that may help with ideas. Even those using a more prescriptive curriculum like Frog Street can come and get help adjusting the curriculum to meet individual needs.

Course: American Red Cross First Aid & CPR/AED for Adult, Child, Infant 5/16/15
Saturday, May 16, 2015 8:30am - 2:30pm

Learn the appropriate techniques for applying standard first aid procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation with and without AED’s. (1/2 hour lunch)

Register by Thursday, May 14, 2015 with the paid fee. Please remember to provide your center name and name(s) of staff attending. Cost is $50.00 per participant, $35.00 for QRIS participants.

Cancellations received at least two business days prior to each course will be eligible for fee transfer/refund. After that time, no transfers/refunds will be issued.

Explore the seven subscales and the indicators that make up the Early Childhood and Infant-Toddler Environment Rating Scales, Third Version. Discover the differences between the ECERS-R and the ECERS-3. Recommended for ALL School Readiness program preschool staff.

Course: Teaching Strategies GOLD Overview 5/28/15

In this training, participants will be provided with an overview of the Teaching Strategies GOLD observational assessment system. We will review its purpose, structure, identify key aspects of the system and review the assessment cycle.  Participants will actively observe children in video clips, assigning an appropriate level to each based on their observations.

Course: How to Administer the ASQ-3 & ASQ:SE 6/2/15
Tuesday, June 2, 2015 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Topics including screening and assessment will be discussed as well as exploring the new features of the Ages & Stages Questionnaires Third Edition and the ASQ: Social-Emotional Screening Tool. Participants will be actively involved observing children and completing ASQs.

Course: Sensory Processing Disorder: Kids Who Feel Too Much 6/10/15

Sensory processing disorder is a condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. In this presentation, we will discuss the symptoms, causes and treatment of the disorder. Also, we will discuss strategies to help a child with sensory

Network, brainstorm, and learn from other directors about common topics or current events. Part of each meeting will inlcude a discussion of curent legislative issues including recommendations from the Early Learning Advisory Council, FLAEYC, and FACCM. Course: School Readiness/Babysitter's Training/Pediatric First Aid & CPR Series 6/15-6/16/15

This 2-part series is designed for students ages 11 through 15 who want to start their own babysitting business. It combines American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training with Pediatric First Aid and CPR, and adds an introduction to school readiness and its importance with young children.

Course: Florida Early Learning & Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds 6/17/15

This training provides an overview of the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds (2011) and examples of developmentally appropriate instructional techniques for four-year-old children.

It addresses the history and development of the Standards through a PowerPoint presentation, video clips, and  hands-on activities. This is an instructor-led course. It is not offered online. Cost is FREE for all participants.
